Alcohol Awareness Week - Understanding Alcohol Harms

It’s not always obvious what happens on the inside as a result of regular excessive drinking and the image of biting into a ripe, juicy apple and finding that it’s rotten inside, can be a useful metaphor.

In the long term, high level alcohol consumption can lead to numerous and serious health issues.

Here are the top five harms associated with long-term alcohol abuse:

1. Liver Damage: Prolonged excessive alcohol consumption can cause severe liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and fatty liver disease. The liver's ability to regenerate and function properly is compromised, leading to life-threatening conditions.

2. Heart Problems: Chronic heavy drinking increases the risk of high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, and even strokes. The heart muscles weaken, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood efficiently.

3. Brain Damage & Mental health: Long-term alcohol abuse can result in permanent damage to the brain, affecting cognitive functions. Memory loss, confusion, and severe mental health issues like depression and anxiety are common among heavy drinkers.

4. Weakened Immune System: Heavy drinking weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and diseases. This includes an increased risk of respiratory infections like pneumonia and a slower recovery from illnesses.

5. Digestive Issues: Excessive alcohol intake can lead to a range of gastrointestinal problems, including gastritis, pancreatitis, and an increased risk of developing stomach and oesophageal cancers. The digestive system becomes inflamed and unable to absorb nutrients properly.

Understanding these consequences is essential for making informed decisions about alcohol consumption and the choices that will lead to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
